The Row is set. Eight talks, one welcome, one invocation — November 12.

The Night

Named for the people who climbed.

Our stage this year is on 141st and Saint Nicholas — a stone’s throw from Strivers’ Row, two blocks of Manhattan between West 138th and 139th, running from Adam Clayton Powell Jr. to Frederick Douglass. Originally a series of row houses built in the 1890s by some of the top design firms of the day. But the timing was terrible: the Panic of 1893 had set in, and sales collapsed.

Come 1919–1920, Harlem’s Black professional class — doctors, lawyers, architects, and musicians like W.C. Handy, Eubie Blake, and Fletcher Henderson — began buying into those rowhouses, working ferociously to afford and keep those homes. The neighborhood started calling it “Strivers’ Row” for the people striving to get there. Today it’s home to the St. Nicholas Historic District — and our stage for the evening, Harlem School of the Arts.

This year’s theme is “Where Strivers Rise,” featuring eight speakers.
